Sigma Pi Phi is recognized as the first African-American Greek-lettered organization. Sigma Pi Phi was founded on May 15, 1904 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by a group of African-American professionals. As of June 2012, Sigma Pi Phi has over 5,000 members and over 140 "member boulés" (comparable to chapters) throughout the United States, the United Kingdom and the Bahamas. Gamma Epsilon Boulé (Sacramento) was founded on July 7, 1984 as part of the Fraternity. The Fraternity is formally referred to as the Grand Boulé of Sigma Pi Phi and convenes a convention every even-numbered year.
Gamma Epsilon Boulé first Sire Archon was John Wesley Hudson, M.D. who had years earlier, started a pediatrics practice in 1965, serving multi-ethnic patients, in South Sacramento. Sire Archon Hudson wrote a letter on July 27, 1984 to the Grand Sire Archon stating that Gamma Epsilon Boulé had completed its chartering ceremony. The list of charter members included fourteen distinguished professionals in the Sacramento metropolitan area.
Gamma Epsilon Boulé continues to attract men of distinction. The membership represents a variety of professions, including the following: medicine, dentistry, health care, law, politics, architecture, engineering, real estate development, education, the entertainment industry and business.
